Depression

Depression is a common problem in senior adults that often goes untreated but depression is not a normal part of aging! Depression is an illness of the body, mind, and thought that can be treated.

Thoughts and feelings of someone who is experiencing depressive symptoms can include:

  • persistent sadness
  • feelings of hopelessness
  • feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • nervousness, restlessness or irritability
  • tiredness and fatigue
  • not enjoying things that you used to

It can affect the body by:

  • sleeping more or less than usual
  • changing appetite
  • eating more or less than usual
  • headaches
  • stomach aches
  • chronic pain

Depression can be a family trait, it can be triggered by life events, or it can come as a consequence of other diseases such as a stroke, heart attack, diabetes, cancer, or thyroid imbalance.

Treatment must begin with a thorough evaluation to understand the cause. Medications and counseling can both be helpful alone or together to restore well being and satisfaction with life.
